Seiko 6245-9000

Introduction

By now, you are probably aware that I am a fan of vintage Seiko and, keeping in line with that, for review today is my Seiko 6245-9000. Seiko introduced this reference in around 1965 as its upper range automatic watch and I believe it must have been well received as it was essentially rebranded in around 1967 as Grand Seiko's first automatic watch.

Three things I like

1. Case shape: I love the angular case shape, and I am definitely not the only one as Grand Seiko still references this case shape in its modern watches, such as in its 62GS line.

2. Bezel-free design: This watch has an uncommon bezel-free design, which allows the case to essentially hug the crystal and dial. This bezel-free design allows for a much cleaner look.

3. Dial and hands: The broad, polished and faceted indices pair perfectly with the sword hour and minute hands, which gives the watch a bold yet sleek look. The stepped minute track is also an excellent touch, adding further depth to the dial.

Three things I dislike, or wish were different

1. Date function: I specifically chose this reference over the 6246-9000, as that reference has an additional day function. However, if there was an option, I would not hesitate to choose a version of this watch without a day or date function, as it would allow for an even cleaner look.

2. Case material: This is really a tall order but this watch would be a lot better if it was made from 'HSS' (which I believe stands for hardened stainless steel), as the hardness of that material would allow for a superior preservation of this watch's shape and finish. To see what HSS looks like, see my write-up on my Seiko 3883-7000.

3. Crown: Finally, a branded crown would have been a nice touch.

As always, I hope you have enjoyed my review.
