Ulysse Nardin watch

Introduction

Today, I am reviewing my Ulysse Nardin manual wind watch in 14 karat solid yellow gold with a small seconds hand.

Three things I like

1. Case: Despite the softness of gold, the svelte lines of the case have been preserved extremely well. This, combined with the layer of patina built up in certain areas on the case, tells me that the watch has been used quite sparingly. The patina on the case is particularly beautiful as it gives off brilliant flashes of purple-blue when viewed from certain angles.

2. Proportions: The watch is very well proportioned at around 35mm across, without including the crown, and 41mm from lug to lug.

3. Hands: The slender needle style hour and minute hands are very elegant.

Three things I dislike, or wish were different

1. Dial colour: The colour of the dial is too gold/cream for my liking, which makes it quite hard to pair with straps. I consider that I have done quite well in my strap choice for this watch by choosing to embrace its gold tones and pairing it with a golden brown strap. I have also tried to make the watch more casual, and therefore more versatile, by implementing 'rally' style holes in the strap and choosing to wear the strap on its less shiny suede side.

2. Dial furniture: I am not the biggest fan of the 12, 2, 4, 8, 10 hour markings as, to me, they date the watch to the 1940s/50s and make the watch a little less versatile to wear in this day and age.

3. Case back: The case back is a snap on design. I wish the case back was a screw down design instead, as that generally allows easier access to the movement and provides better protection against moisture intrusion.

I hope you have enjoyed this review.
